School Spying on Students at Home with Laptop Webcam
February 18, 2010
According to an article on engadget, a class-action lawsuit was filed in Pennsylvania against the Lower Merion school district stating that the “unauthorized, inappropriate and indiscriminate remote activiation” of webcams on students laptops was conducted without prior knowledge or permission. Apparently, the assistant principle of Harriton High School, Lindy Mastko, told a student that he was “engaged in improper behavior in his home”. When the assistant principle was questioned as to how this information was obtained, Mastko told both the boy and his father that the school district had the ability to remotely activiate the webcam on the students laptop.
An official statement from the Lower Merion School District superintendent Christopher McGinley can be found on their website, mentioning “a security feature intended to track lost, stolen and missing laptops.” He goes on to say that the district “has not used t he tracking feature or web cam for any other purpose or in any other manner whatsoever”, but the matter is “under review”.
I personally don’t see how they are going to blow this over. If the assistant principle is aware of activity going on at a students home without having been there to witness it personally, then the only way I can see they obtained this information is through the web cam. If they are pulling stunts like this, I would say some heads should roll for this one for sure, along with some fines and some jail time. What do you think?

Net TV Show
February 11, 2010
Okay, so my buddy and I have decided to start our own Net TV show. We haven’t come up with a name for the show yet as we are trying to get a feel for it and see what the feedback on it will be. Basically, we will be covering all things tech, geek, and anime and probably whatever comes to our minds. We shot the test pilot on February 07, 2010 and I finally got it uploaded somewhere that I can share it with everyone. It has definitely been a learning experience, and I am teaching myself video editing as we go, so they will get better with progress. It was definitely fun shooting for the first time, and I am looking forward to the next show. Anyways, below is the announcement I made for the show, and following that is the test pilot broken up into 4 segments.

The Benefit and Downfall of Free Consultations
February 3, 2010
Yesterday I read an article about the Pros and Cons of Free Consultation and I feel that this is a good topic to discuss on my blog.
The question is asked of us all, “How much is too much when giving away free services?” I remember the first client I had, it seemed like every time we met and they would change their minds, I was giving them something new for free that we had not previously agreed upon. So when is enough enough?
You may see that a lot of freelancers offer free time-constrained consultations. If so, you have probably asked yourself if you should do the same. There is no right or wrong answer that I can give you. This is something you will have to determine for yourself. I have met designers that will never meet a client without a consultation fee being paid first, and I have personally met with clients for free in order to get their business. I see the latter happening more frequently with new designers than with those who have established a clientele.
So without any further delay, below are what I consider Advantages and Disadvantages of free consultations. Read More…

Intellectual Property on the Web: Free for All, or Free for None?
February 2, 2010
As many of you may have noticed, my blog contains reposts of articles I find during my day on the web from select sites I frequent. My goal is to share the same content I read with those who share common interests. Every post that I make that does comes from a third party always begins with a link back to the source. I don’t in any way try to take credit for someone else’s work. However, it has been brought to my attention that some may see this as an issue. Here are some of the complaints I have seen (not on my blog personally, just in general): Read More…

AT&T to invest $2B in mobile network
February 1, 2010

iPhone users frequently complain about network service on AT&T
(CNET) — AT&T said Thursday that it will invest an additional $2 billion in its network in 2010 to make sure it keeps up with the growing demand from new smartphones and other 3G data devices, such as the Apple iPad, on its network.
During its fourth quarter 2009 conference call, Chief Operating Officer John Stankey said AT&T plans to spend between $18 billion and $19 billion in 2010 upgrading its wireless and backhaul networks to handle the onslaught of new traffic. This is roughly $2 billion more than the company had invested in the previous year.
Specifically, Stankey said AT&T will add 2,000 new cell sites and upgrade existing cell sites with three times more fiber links than it had in 2009. This will increase capacity for the backhaul network that connects the cell towers to AT&T’s main network. The backhaul portion of the network is a critical component to AT&T’s network; with these upgrades in place, Stankey said the company will be able to easily upgrade in the future to 4G wireless technology.
AT&T will begin testing its 4G network using LTE, the same technology Verizon Wireless is using for its 4G network, starting in 2010, with a few commercial deployments ready in 2011 and more commercial deployments in 2012. Read More…
